Sexual desire is powerful…. We need to understand it so we came take charge of it and direct it to Gods Glory.
Shakespeare’s Romeo understood the power of sexual desire: “Love is a smoke made with the fume of sighs. Being purged, a fire sparkling in lovers eyes. Being vexed, a sea nourished with lovers tears. What is it else? A madness most discreet, a choking gall and a preserving sweet.”
Sexologists recognise it. 21st century researchers John Bancroft having worked in sex all his life says in a recent paper that “for most important aspects of our lives (including sex) we will never know the ‘‘truth’’ for certain”.
And Helen Fisher, Neurobiologist and Anthropologist of today says “Everywhere people sing for love, pray for love, work for love, live for love and die for love. Nothing can extinguish the human drive to love.”
King Solomon writes in the Song of Songs (8:6) “love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame.”
Be aware and beware: there is no room for complacency.
Jesus alerts of the dangers of sexual thoughts and fantasies, speaking of sexual immorality as a sin of the “heart” (Matthew 15:19; Mark 7:21); and calling for extreme measures to resist lust.
Mathew 5:28-29 “But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.”
In Acts writing to the Gentiles, sexual immorality is equated with idolatry (15:20-29) and the same in Revelation (2:20)
It is an act of darkness (Romans 13:13)
And a sin against the created gift of our own body (1 Corinthians 6:18)
How do we see this played out in the world around us?
We will go there next…
